Volle Schlagzahl: Alle 35 Länder haben Zeit gefunden, für den Februar Perlen aus den heimischen Gefilden herauszusuchen. Ein wenig stolz macht auch die Tatsache, dass immer mehr Medien von uns Notiz nehmen: SPIN, genauer Spinearth.tv hostet jeden Monat den kompletten Music Alliance Pact. Der Guardian pickt sich immer mal wieder Rosinen von uns raus und hat einige von uns diesen Monat interviewt (Link folgt), während MTV Rumänien ihren Vertreter in den News vorgestellt hat. Página 12, eine Tageszeitung aus Argentinien hat uns auch schon entdeckt, auch on3 hat mich schon mal interviewt - leider darf ich die mp3 nicht online stellen. Und wenn es noch weiterer Beweise bedarf, dass Ambientronics dieses Jahr das große Ding sein wird (zumindest für meinen Geschmack), der muss sich einfach nur meine Empfehlungen anhören. Exzellente Songs.

Dänemarks Before The Snow – Gabriel: Feine Gitarrenläufe à la Interpol, charismatischer Gesang à la Stereophonics, ein blitzsauberer Song
Frankreichs Satine – Iron Güm: Poptronic, Elektrorock, leicht düster angehaucht, verspielt und sphärisch.
Griechenlands Etten – Clockwork Skies: Ein ganz feiner Synthietronic mit akustischer Gitarre und Sampling, hart an der Grenze zum Kitsch, aber stets souverän mit seinem zerbrechlichen Gesang
Japans LITE – The Sun Sank: Mathrock kam ja leider nie so wirklich groß raus, dabei sind Battles und Foals mit die besten Bands der letzten 10 Jahre. LITE versucht sich an ähnlichem, erreicht nicht ganz die hohe Qualität, ist aber dennoch meilenweit vor dem üblichen Tronic-Gehoppel.
USAs Toro Y Moi – Thanks Vision: Chillwave à la Washed Out oder jj, nicht die beste Stimme, aber so 2010, dass es fast schon weh tut. Gut!

Argentina – Zonaindie
Eloisa Lopez – Espiral

This is one of Zonaindie’s favorite tracks from 2009. It was taken from Eloisa’s third album, Por Un Paisaje. Maybe we like her so much because she manages to elegantly combine acoustic textures with native South American percussions and digital sounds. Espiral is a great example of this, and yet an unbelievably catchy tune that has Leo García as a guest vocalist. What else could you ask for?

Australia – Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Kite Club – Royal Gums

Royal Gums is one of those tracks that grabs you straight away and drags you along for three minutes thanks to its chanting hooks and penchant for large-scale production. It opens with a beat lifted from Psychocandy and an explosion of layered vocals but then settles into a calming, meditative refrain, just letting the melody and harmonies carry the song. Kite Club (aka Nicholas Futcher) marries the laptop trickery to the tune without letting it control the song nor detract from its melodic core.

Brazil – Meio Desligado

When it comes to avant-garde music in Brazil, Barulhista (which means something like “noise follower”) is certainly an artist to keep an eye on. His electro-acoustic sounds encompass experimental electronica and more concrete music both in his solo songs and in the soundtracks he composes. Indiota (a mix of “indie” and “idiot” in Portuguese) is as close to pop as he has ever been.

A supergroup of sorts featuring members of Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club and Will Currie & The Country French among others, Novels quietly released their self-titled debut EP into the world around Christmas. As No Hard Feelings (not to mention the other four tracks) demonstrates, it totally lives up to its pedigree. The album is full of catchy, 70s-inspired pop and it makes the EP well worth a (free!) download.

Chile – Super 45
Moreno – Pica

Moreno is the new darling of Chilean indie-rock. With a powerful and psychedelic sound, Giancarlo Landini’s project – he plays every instrument on record and has a backing band for live shows – is inspired by lo-fi legends such as Lou Barlow (Sebadoh), J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) and Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), with a classic flavor.

China – Wooozy
Mosaic – Sunshine Train

Mosaic are one of the new generation of bands from Chengdu. They were called GT6 before they changed their name in 2008. At the end of last year they successfully completed a tour of China through 10 cities. Although they haven’t released a full-length album, they are definitely worth a listen.

After trying with different partners, Rayo and Toby finally realized they themselves were the perfect combination. The duo mix good urban music with a shot of melody and their approach is both fresh and unsettling.

Before The Show was originally a solo project by multi-instrumentalist Laurids Smedegaard, who often worked on his own songs just hours before he went on stage with any one of the numerous other bands he’s involved in (hence the band name). Now a quintet, Before The Show are working on getting their debut released and until that happens we can all enjoy this excellent taste of what’s to come.

Jose Vanders is a piano-playing chanteuse who is less eccentric than Regina Spektor and smarter than Kate Nash, but with even more doe-eyed, curly-haired cuteness. For Now shows off her gift for melody and picture-book lyrics, albeit on a ukulele instead of her usual piano. Jose has released three exquisite EPs in each of the past three years, aged 17, 18 and 19. Surely fame beckons at 20.

Estonia – Popop
Barthol Lo Mejor – Windshield Pfeiffer

Barthol Lo Mejor makes popdada music – experiments with electro rhythms and unconventional sounds including pieces of conversations, cliches, old movies and anime cartoons. After their well-receive debut Let’s Rock, Kiki Pau return with a fantastic sophomore album to be released in early March. A MAP exclusive, An Old Song is the opening track of White Mountain and shows a more guitar-driven band with uplifting spirits. Those following the Nordic indie scene will hear about this band quite a lot this year because the whole album is a keeper that channels the classic sound of T.Rex, The Velvet Underground and left-field US guitar gods such as Pavement and Guide By Voices without forgetting a twist of Finnish pop.

Drawing inspiration from northern poptronica (Under Byen, Mùm, Efterklang) and electro rock bands (Radiohead, The Notwist), Satine gave birth to their first intimate yet powerful tracks in 2004. Live, the band unfolds a dreamlike visual universe with video projections and light shows that make every concert a unique experience. But it’s always deep, beautiful and organic.

Napoli Is Not Nepal is the solo project of Cologne-based Hendryk Martin. What he calls ‘electro nihilism’, I’d call outstanding ambient electro with some eclectic moments. Although People Call It Mantra was released in mid-2009 as part of the album Boredom Is Always Counterrevolutionary, it’s still quite a statement for the growing influence of music that sits between ambient and indie.

Etten, former lead singer of the Greek band Film, weaves her tales of hope and dreams in a warm bearskin coat of pop sensibilities. Her voice offers the moods ‘light and shade’, while production touches colorfully paint enchanting pictures. Dark, but never needlessly so, I Know You’re Behind Me But I’m Not Scared is an intoxicating, addictive debut that offers a rich, distinct world of lullabies, spacey timbres and ghostly beauty. It blends brittle, 80s-influenced electro and Knife-inspired synths with buzzing basslines, guitars and samples in a sound that’s both atmospheric and richly textured.

Mammut were formed in 2003 by two boys and three girls, aged 14-16. David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine called them “a really good band”. They played SXSW in 2007 and toured with dEUS in Iceland and Germany. In 2008, Mammut released their second album, Karkari, through Icelandic label Record Records. Svefnsykt was its first single.

Noush Like Sploosh is one of the most promising hopefuls of India’s growing, urban singer-songwriter scene. Armed with a dry wit and a musical sensibility falling somewhere between Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap, Noush Like Sploosh’s music is refreshing indie-pop that’s lyrical yet largely accessible. 3 Act Circus brings together myriad references, a laid-back ambient pop vibe and Ms Sploosh’s positively delectable vocals.

The main quality of København Store’s music is its ability to build a layered and monumental sound with an incredibly strong emotional impact. There is something vast about the band, as if they could throw their songs for miles and miles. Strangers is taken from the forthcoming release, Hi. LITE are one of the most enthusiastic live bands in Tokyo. They are often compared to Battles and Mogwai, and combine math-rock power and precision with emotionally-charged compositions. Furland are famous for having a huge grass-ball on stage, this Mexico City quartet dream of tripping to a place where strawberry fields stretch forever. Quiero Ser Un Color is the first single off a 360-degree work filled with lush orchestrations, majestic vibes and acidic lyrics stuffed with cotton candy – food for thought.

Their whimsical, sexy sound merges with a slightly more eerie tone of the vocal melodies and harmonies between frontlady Monica Tormell and her accompanying musicians. Playing a mix of piano, drums, guitars and steel drums, Moon & Sun have definitely got the 2010 sound down with their Caribbean sensibilities.

New Zealand’s best one-man band multi-instrumentalist psych-noise outfit is Pumice, the pseudonym of Stefan Neville. One of Pumice’s best albums, 2007’s Pebbles, is about to get a vinyl release on Soft Abuse Records. Wheezing organ and guitar feedback combine in album centrepiece Greenock, named after the Scottish village Neville’s ancestors originated from.

Team Me play warm and rich orchestrated pop music in the same vein as Sufjan Stevens, Efterklang, Hjaltalin or Sigur Rós. This used to be Marius D. Hagen’s one-man band – a recording project where he could play the songs that didn’t fit in his other bands. But Team Me has grown into a seven-strong orchestra and the fragile acoustic songs Hagen used to play have been transformed into a much larger and richer sound. Hagen is also a member of alternative rock band Jaqueline and half of semi-electronic pop duo SiN along with Tord Øverland Knudsen of English band The Wombats. SiN will release their debut album later this year and hopefully we’ll also get a release from Team Me in 2010.

Rafo De La Cuba has left anonymity to become an idol of Web 2.0. His home demos skip from ear to ear so it was no surprise that someone so talented could not stay hidden. Influenced by The Beatles, his songs tell simply of life – intimate stories turned into melancholic, but not sad, poetry. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to hear new material, with his debut LP due to be released soon.

Jasmin currently lives in Lisbon and besides her solo career, she is the vocalist for Triplet, a rock band.

Kumm started 12 years ago as an art-rock band. Much like their influences, Sonic Youth and Spritualized, they have developed a new approach to rock by constantly experimenting with various sounds and styles. This is a band that has grown up by getting younger.

Even if you’re just a casual hip hop listener, you owe it to yourself to give Werd a spin. The 22-year-old’s rhymes are as cunningly creative as they are uncompromising and he executes them with such furious, stylish precision. You can (and should) download everything the Edinburgh rapper has done for free from his Bandcamp page. In the meantime, the irresistible force of sub-two-minute track Breakdown will leave you wanting more… which is the point, yes?

Stellarium are a shoegaze band, and that’s all you need to know. Instead of updating a familiar sound, they do something even more commendable by playing shoegaze as if it never went away. The moment the fuzz bass comes in during Chocolate & Strawberry, you’re caught in the band’s intricate web of white noise, ghostly reverb and cryptic vocals. Overall, the whole thing sounds like a long shutter exposure speeding past bright lights. Bliss.

Dans Republic is the coming together of two groups – Flash Republic, a band with the ability to set the dancefloors alight, and Foto Na Dans, who are breaking the boundaries of Afrikaans music with their own signature style. Their electro-tinged song Afrikaans showcases and merges the English and Afrikaans genre. It blends their unique styles seamlessly into something that is dreamy, indie, rock and electro all at once, yet never compromises each band’s sound.

Estereotypo are one of those pop-rock bands with which you can’t remain indifferent. It’s best to see them live, where their power and presence are reminiscent of bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Faint, Foals or Delorean. Based in Santander, their second album, Love Your City, is out this month and The Big Fake embodies the powerful sound of this great indie band.

Sweden – Swedesplease

This song is great example of romantic swirling pop à la Rufus Wainwright. It’s one of three songs that are available from Stockholm resident Staphan O’Bell’s forthcoming album. If On The Rooftop is any indication then that album will be one to keep an eye out for.

Wincho Schäfer, Erik Aldrey and Rafael Cadavieco are musicians from famous Venezuelan bands Desorden Publico, Zapato 3 and Amigos Invisibles who decided to join talents in this interesting project called Atkinson. They launched their first production last March and since then they’ve been touring the country amazing new fans with smart lyrics and clean but catchy pop-rock. Pais Tropical is a musical explanation of the socio-political particularities of Venezuela.

Ever since FBi Radio started broadcasting regularly some five years ago, Sydney’s independent music scene has flourished from the much-needed lifeblood and community support that the station provides. A lot of young musicians now have an alternative to Triple J to supplement their listening habits and this has encouraged the more experimental writers to pursue their own distinct sounds, knowing they will be played and heard. Seekae is the clear breakout band out of Sydney’s resurging experimental electronic music. With their abstract vocals and dreamy atmosphere they have earned their place as leaders of the city’s 2010 sound.

Curumin is one of the biggest names of the contemporary independent music scene in Brazil. A drummer and singer, besides his solo work, he plays with artists such as Otto, Céu and Guizado. Vem Menina is a samba from his debut album, Achados e Perdidos, released in 2003. His latest album, Japan Pop Show, was released last year and shows his talent to compose funk, samba, rock and electronic songs.

Some people hear Patrick Watson in Leif Vollebekk’s vocals. Others have compared his music to that of Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy. I’m not sure about the comparisons, but I know this: Vollebekk is an incredibly gifted performer and artist, and when his debut album, Inland, gets re-released in a few weeks on hot new Toronto label Nevado Records, all of Canada is going to find out just how talented he is.

Milton Mahan and Pablo Munoz are De Janeiros, one of the most interesting projects in the Chilean experimental scene. In the trend of bands such as Health or Fuck Buttons – that kind of plastic and colorful noise – their sound goes beyond by adding a more playful and “tropical” feeling to it. Chilean net-label Michita Rex have made their sophomore album Plateado available to downloaded for free here.

PK14 is the best post-punk band in China. Formed in 1997, they have released five albums. Currently, they are preparing a new album to be release this year and they will attend SXSW in March.

Cours Lapin is what happens when four movie score composers (Louise Alenius, Asger Baden, Peder and Jonas Struck) get together to do pop. Their name is French (translated as “bunny run”), their lyrics are in French (of course) and the French chanson is at the root of their mellow, melancholic pop that makes me think of black and white movies (and yes, they’re French).

Last month I picked an Italian musician based in England for MAP – this time it’s the turn of an Englishman currently living in Scotland. Thomas Western’s bluesy/folky approach to songwriting is reminiscent of Elliott Smith or Bob Dylan, while his exquisite vocal range is pitched halfway between Tim and Jeff Buckley. Western moved from Derbyshire to Edinburgh last year to complete his university studies and Your Front Door is his masterpiece.

UNCANDY (and yes, it’s important to write it in capital letters) is multi-talented Maria Juur from Tallinn. Her home recordings have already created quite a buzz in the Estonian indie scene and rumour has it we won’t have to wait long for a debut album. She also records under the name Maria Minerva. Lovecool is featured on new Estonian indie compilation album, Kohalik Ja Kohatu 3.

Established in 2003, Vishnudata is a project by electronic dance music guru Ville Lankinen which explores the artist’s techno and house influences. Silver Falls is the closing track of his self-titled sophomore album and progressively it introduces the listener into a shiny ethereal atmosphere and psychedelic soundscape. This radio edit version, which features Suho Superstar on vocals, is included in a recently released EP along with three more remixes.

Born in Lebanon, Ibrahim Maalouf grew up in Paris and began studying the trumped at the age of seven. Ten years later he met Maurice André, who advised him to give up his mathematics studies to dedicate himself to music. Maalouf also had the opportunity to record a song with French singer Matthieu Chedid and this collaboration can be found in the very good Diachronism album. The track Souma Hia carries a great deal of energy.

Get Well Soon is the solo project of Konstantin Gropper, a classically trained singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Berlin. His soulful and sophisticated songs take the same path as the likes of Sufjan Stevens or Zach Condon. 5 Steps / 7 Swords is the first single release from second album Vexations.

Exposed By Observers aim to rape the listeners’ ears, yet are less faithfully wed to punk and more interested in dance-derived rhythms, deploying more tightly coiled riffs and distinctive beats than most screamo bands. Secondhand Youth EP, which was given away for free on their website, sounds like everything they’d ever heard, spewed out and rewired for a different type of moshpit etiquette, a brand new teenage riot. They frantically blend cheap samples, beatbox rhythms, clicks, bleeps, fringes, beeps and guitars with manic electro buzz and raw, squawking vocals. Unsurprisingly, there’s also a noticeable undercurrent of emo here too, but actually feels charged and compelling in the momentary tantrums of In My Skin. Listen loud!

Bloodgroup was formed in 2006 by Halez, Lilja, Raggi and Janus during some boring winter days on the east coast of Iceland and they make catchy electronic dance-pop. Debut album Sticky Situation was released on the band’s own label, Sild Ehf, and got excellent reviews. Its follow-up, Dry Land, was released on the Record Records label last month. My Arms is their latest single.

Seven Degrees is a boy-girl punk duo from New Delhi. This irreverent twosome produce angular, infectious punk that’s largely bare-boned yet crashy enough to cause a decent racket. Shadows In The Dark is part of a free compilation album called Stupid Stupid Stupid available on Indiecision. The song is a spiralling, old-school punk tribute that leaves you with the distinct feeling of wanting to get up and not be lazy anymore.

Seringai are one of the finest Indonesian metal bands, often described as a blend of Motorhead and Black Sabbath. Their brilliant lyrics are a social critique of religious extremism, policies, domestic violence and sometimes just about stupid people.

Its creator, Ross Turner, is known for his work behind the drum kit with various Irish bands but stepping out on his own here as I Am The Cosmos, he shows us what he can do in sole producer mode.

There was a blizzard here last week and I found myself listening again to this third album by Port-Royal. It was the perfect soundtrack. Shoegaze, IDM, electro and ambient influences blend together to build an epic soundscape. The Genoa-based quartet used to be on the renowned Resonant label and have worked with Ulrich Schnauss and made remixes for Ladytron and Felix Da Housecat. Now they’re back with a throbbing, intense, unpredictable, brimful of life new record.

Green Blossoms are folky duo Aiko Koga and Anthony Guerra. Aiko sings and plays ukulele, Anthony plays the other instruments. They released their second album, Whiskey Leaves, on US-based Digitalis Recordings last summer. Hana Akari is beautiful, softly-intoned songwriting and its ghostly incantations will stick in the back of your mind.

The Mexican alternative scene recently witnessed the rise of a synthetic yet raw punk generation raiding the underground. A frenetic quintet from desertic Hermosillo stood out – The Hong Kong Blood Opera. A bloody opera? More like straight hardcore screaming evil and rough beats. The HKBO got sweaty teenagers shaking their guts and also blew the critics away when they won a nationwide competition sponsored by a monopolic corporation a few years ago. Instead of vanishing like every band from those schemes usually does, they reappeared with a remarkable album titled Not For The Faint Of Heart. The record breaks the rock-band-contest cliché and at the same time mocks the whole mediatic circus and abusive music industry models with killer singles like Cansei De Ser Gangsta.

Happy New Year from the Netherlands crew. We’ll kickstart 2010 with one of the most talked-about Amsterdam acts, The Wooden Constructions. Their tribal disco with punk-infused lyrics (which harness the confidence of Mark E. Smith) sit alongside their own blend of twangy guitars and driving rhythms. Their unique musical stylings and great live shows have got the city rather excited about what 2010 might offer for this band and the Amsterdam scene itself. Watch this space.

For three decades, Chris Knox has made some of New Zealand’s most exciting music – from the punk of The Enemy, Toy Love, virtually inventing the country’s indie music scene with four-track recordings of his band Tall Dwarfs and writing one of the nation’s most popular songs. Knox suffered a debilitating stroke last year and to aid his recovery many who have been influenced by him have contributed to an album of covers called Stroke. The roll call includes Jay Reatard, Stephen Merrit, Will Oldham, Lou Barlow and more. Crush, from The Tall Dwarfs’ 1984 EP Slug Bucket Hairy Breath Monster, is performed by The Mint Chicks, one of New Zealand’s most exciting bands.

Sacred Harp are a trio from Oslo who recently released their beautiful self-titled debut EP on the small Norwegian label The Perfect Hoax. Their music is quite difficult to describe because it’s so in the middle of everything. It’s dark, but there’s also a lot of light and colour in there. It’s experimental, but it’s also full of pop structures and lovely melodies. It’s sacral and calm, other times almost brutal. It’s music you just have to listen to. The members are from Norway, Finland and Holland, so they really fit the spirit of the Music Alliance Pact.

Malcontent are a quartet from Oporto led by Sérgio Costa. When you listen to them you know their influences (The Jesus And Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails) and they don’t deny them. They started playing in 2007 and released several promo singles. Finally, they have their first full LP out, called Love The Gun, which the band self-released.

Vlaicu Golcea and Electric Brother are two incredibly talented multi-instrument players. They combine conventional music with electronic beats and the creative rhythms of Tavi Scurtu, the drummer who juggles with sound. To an already great recipe, we add Marta Hristea’s incredible voice for the perfect nu-jazz experience. After a six-year pause, they’ve just released their second album, Cinema, which can be fully downloaded here.

Galleries have only been in existence for a matter of months, yet the quality of the songs on their MySpace page can’t help but mark them out as a band whose reach is sure to extend much wider than the blogosphere. The Glasgow group is made up of three students and, interestingly, BBC political reporter Andrew Black on drums. The lush sounds of Underground Overground beautifully hints at their The National and Jimmy Eat World influences and is taken from Galleries’ forthcoming debut EP. It’s a MAP exclusive download so feel privileged that you’re getting to own it first.

Have we got a classic for you this month! Though now defunct, Sherene’s Closet is still very much celebrated in the Singaporean music scene. You might say it all started with this demo recorded during the now legendary Green Room Sessions, and I hear it’s a bit rarer than the LP version. This should be considered one of the best local songs ever recorded, owing to Gerald Stahlman’s stellar vocal delivery and the raw energy of the rest of the band.

“A quaint mixture consisting of three parts suburb and two parts platteland” make up the phenomenon that is Ashtray Electric. They combine delicate beats, heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies that lead to a rather fresh, unconventional sound, albeit one that gets your feet tapping. Lia has been compared to Editors and Interpol but Ashtray Electric bring a fresh new sound that has them at the forefront of the indie scene, and rightly so.

Last year Apollo 18 established themselves as one of the very best rock acts of Korea. Starting with a marvellous post-rock-oriented EP, an amazing album followed in which they experimented with hardcore, shoegaze and psychedelic elements. An international version of the first EP has just been released and before the end of the month it’ll be followed by instrumental rock pieces of a more playful kind. Re-recorded to magically sound even better than before, Warm is a stunningly beautiful post-rock piece of epic proportions best played as loud as possible.

2 Minuts d’Odi (“2 Minutes Of Hate”) are part of the “Brave Coast Punk-Rockers” movement which extends throughout the Costa Brava. Cuidad De Dios (“City Of God”) is a song against religion which speaks of the Palestinian problem and the bad influences that hatred and violence can have on a kid growing thirst for revenge.

Vikesh Kapoor is an up-and-coming acoustic artist, currently based near Boston, who writes ballads which draw their strength from storytelling-type lyricism. After making appearances in Billboard and The Boston Globe, Kapoor is releasing his Newspress Scare 7″ featuring this great rendition of the Kurt Weill-composed Mack The Knife.

El Pacto are music legends in the city of Barquisimeto. Since 1992, they have been devoted to merging rock, pop, jazz, ska and folk music in a sound so original and vanguardist, they have even influenced famous national bands like Amigos Invisibles. Their shows ususally include circus-like performances with actors and acrobats. Hyperdance En La Curva De San Pablo is taken from the album of the same name.

Nachtrag: Wie er mir in den Kommentaren verraten hat, hat Flo von fallen/legen auch gerade ein Mixtape mit Münchener Bands zusammengestellt – und siehe da, keinerlei Überschneidung! Wunderbare Sache das!

Beginnen wir mit doch gleich mit dem Sound, der weltweit am meisten Schallwellen verursacht haben dürfte: Munich Bass. Der einzige Vertreter ist Schlachthofbronx aus dem gleichnamigen Viertel. Ebenso global wie die Viehwirtschaft mit ihrem Futtermittel-Fortpflanzungsflüssigkeiten-Fleischhälften-Ringtausch ist auch der Sound der Drei (von denen man allerdings oft nur Zwei auf Bildern sieht…). Eine irrsinnig tanzbare Melange aus Versatzstücken von Musikrichtungen aus aller Herren Länder, die nicht nur global-eklektisch ist, sondern auch als World Bass weltweit verstreute Geschwister im Geiste besitzt. Die Galionsfigur Diplo und insbesondere sein Projekt Major Lazer sind 2009 in den Musikblogs der Welt angekommen, Schlachthofbronx besitzt zumindest in der Szene einen herausragenden Ruf. Wer ihrem Facebookprofil folgt, macht innerhalb weniger Wochen eine Weltreise mit: Südafrika, Skandinavien und so weiter. Zum eiskalten Einstieg in die Szene könnte man sich die Big Up 2009!-Liste von Man Recordings zu Gemüte führen, in der sieben Acts ihre Favorite Tracks des Jahres vorstellen, darunter auch die Schlachthofbronx. Wer genaueres zu Schlachthofbronx wissen will, könnte sich dagegen Wer ist denn … Schlachthofbronx? durchlesen.

Wenn wir beim Partyfaktor in einer ähnlichen Liga bleiben wollen, müssen wir uns Frittenbude ansehen: Ursprünglich aus der Nähe von Landshut sind sie inzwischen in München ansässig, durch ihr Label Audiolith jedoch oft nach Hamburg verortet. Was nicht von ungefähr kommt, denn die Leute aus Hamburg pflegen einen ganz bestimmten Musikstil zu fördern, der von Bratze oder Frank Möller a.k.a Knarf Rellöm bekannt sein könnte: Wuchtiger, tanzbarer Electroclash, zum Teil mit deutschen Texten. Frittenbude passt von diesen Faktoren her genau, auch wenn ihre grundsätzliche Attitüde durch eine klare politische Komponente erweitert wird. Dazu kann man stehen, wie man will, eigentlich spielt das bei der grundsätzlichen Stimmung in den Tracks auch gar nicht die große Rolle, auch wenn es in den Texten und besonders live zum Ausdruck kommt. Frittenbude – Pandabär

Beobachtet man Münchens Musikszene bereits etwas länger, wird man nicht an Amadeus vorbeikommen. Mit vollem Namen Gregor Böhm, ist er sowas wie die hellgraue Eminenz der Indieszene: Five!Fast!!Hits!!! – für mich eher von Amadeus denn von Raffi geprägt, letzterer schlägt sich inzwischen übrigens in London durch, waren das Aushängeschild für Münchener Bands, die im Fahrwasser von Libertines und Co. fuhren. Diverse Vorbandauftritte solo oder mit den Broken Hearts zeigten das musikalische Potential und die Vielseitigkeit des inzwischen 26-Jährigen. Doch mit Elektrik Kezy Mezy macht er wohl die Musik, die am Besten zu ihm passt: Bluesrock. Und zwar von der rauen, wunderbaren Sorte.

Wer mehr über Amadeus lesen will, könnte den Konzertbericht im Vorfeld zu Olli Schmidt lesen, die Porträts bei on3 oder Prinz oder aber sein eigenes Label FlowerStreet Records besuchen.

Denn dort sind inzwischen auch drei weitere Bands unter Vertrag, die Beachtung verdienen: Pardon Ms. Arden, Lucky Fish und besonders Tuó. Während ersterer Dreier bereits seit einigen Jahren in der Stadt mit elaboriertem Indie unterwegs sind – beispielsweise im Babalu, wie ihr hier nachlesen könnt – sind die vier Jungs von Lucky Fish eher Vertreter eines klassischen “The-Sounds”, also eines leichten Britpops, wie er vor drei bis vier Jahren extrem populär war. Für mich am interessantesten ist jedoch die mit Abstand jüngste Band, Tuó. Gerade mal 16 Lenze zählen die zwei Mädels, deren zweistimmiger Gesang so ergreifend schön ist, dass man ihn leicht den USA und ihrem Antifolk-Revival zuschreiben möchte. Akustikgitarre, Trommel, mehr braucht es nicht zusätzlich, um ein Publikum mit für München sehr ungewohnten Klängen zu verzaubern, wie demletzt im Atomic Café. Das Album “Walk on Silence” fängt diese Stimmung übrigens ebenfalls perfekt ein.

Ein bairischer Künstler, dem ich internationales Format sofort bescheinige, ist Johannes Dobroschke alias Dobré. Nicht nur, dass er eine fantastische Stimme hat, die nicht von ungefähr an Sufjan Stevens oder Britt Daniel von Spoon erinnert, er weiß sie auch mit wunderbaren Songs in das rechte Licht zu rücken. Zumeist ist er mit seinen Bandkollegen als Dobré und Sepp Kennedy unterwegs, doch ehrlich gesagt, gefallen mir seine Solosachen noch deutlich besser. Alle Songs des sehr sympathischen Fürstenfeldbruckers und seiner Band könnt ihr übrigens im bandeigenen Musikzimmer anhören und runterladen. Ein etwas umfangreicheres Feature hab’ ich ihm im Zuge seiner Weihnachtsgala im Cord auch schon gewidmet.

Dobré – The Melody Is A Stranger

Eine ganz andere Klientel bedienen Candelilla, denen ich im November bereits ein umfangreiches Wer ist denn … samt Albumreview zugedacht habe: Rrrriot-Girl-Trash-Pop, Grunge-Punk, you name it. Ambitioniert, durchdacht, expertimentell haben die vier Münchener Damen sich nun endlich zu einem Album zusammengerauft, das ihren Sound auf den Punkt bringt. Eine Band fernab von jedem Mädchengetue, die mit Herzblut selbst produziert, CD-Hüllen gestaltet, mit Aktaufnahmen versieht, siebdruckt und verschickt.

Herrje, es gibt noch so viele weitere Bands, die seitenweise Artikel wert sind, ein paar sollen hier stellvertretend noch kurz angerissen werden: Sickcity dürfte im Moment wohl noch am meisten Potential haben, den Sprung über den Weißwurschtäquator zu schaffen. Post-Nuclear-Highfive-Disco-Schranz nennen sie es selbst, um Schubladen zu vermeiden. Und in der Tat fällt es schwer, einen Einheitssound auszumachen, zum Teil singt “Conan Kowalski” wie Marilyn Manson, um kurz darauf im höchsten Falsett die Gläser zerspringen zu lassen. Indierock mit Emoseele könnte man da sagen. Doch dann hört man “Julia” und ist mitten in einem Walzer – einem Rhythmus, den man übrigens viel zu selten heutzutage hört. Und beim nächsten Lied ist man bei Rocktronik gelandet. Und so weiter. Also auf alle Fälle mal reinhören! Oder meine Bilder vom PLUS anschauen. Oder das Interview in der SZ lesen.

Kafkas Orient Bazaar haben nicht nur einen strangen Namen, sondern auch das Talent, aus der Sprachmelange Deutsch, Englisch und Türkisch eingängige bis verschrobene Indietracks zu kreieren. Vier Jungs mit einem eigenen Kopf. Und einer ziemlich kaputten Bandseite. Frickel-Funk für Indiekids machen L’egojazz, drei Jungs, die auch mal das meistzitierte Stück Musik der Welt nutzen – das Amen Break – um einen hektischen Beastie Boys-Verschnitt hinzubrettern. Funk ist definitiv immer präsent, jedoch nicht nur in Kombination mit schnellen Punkrapsongs, sondern auch gediegen in Anlehnung an vergangene Red Hot Chili Peppers Momente. Übrigens ebenso wie Candelilla bei Red Can Records unter Vertrag.

Nachtrag: Die neue Version von “Step Into It” sowie der neue und exklusive Song “Ovatime” sind deutlich elektronischer angehaucht als früher. Die Band macht also eine Entwicklung durch – und keine zum Negativen!

Eine völlig unter dem Radar durchfliegende Band – ebenso ihre maßlos unterschätzte Mutterband Kamerakino – ist Parasyte Woman. Hip Hop / Chinesischer Pop / Easy Listening ist die Selbstbezeichnung, trifft’s zwar musikalisch nicht im Ansatz, aber vom Wirrheitsgrad ist man ganz gut dabei. Betrunken machende Lieder, die an selige “Evig Pint”-Zeiten erinnern. Genug Ideen für zwei Bands, sind aber nur zwei Leute, Relle Büst und Tobias Lämmert.

Und natürlich sind mit diesem kleinen Einblick noch lange nicht alle interessanten Münchener Bands abgedeckt. Wer selbst noch weiter graben möchte, der sollte neben den Konzerten in Locations wie der Glockenbachwerkstatt, dem Babalu oder dem Feierwerk auf alle Fälle die Acts des Sound of Munich Now! abgrasen (Preview und Review bei on3) sowie die Liste der Stadtbands bei Sub-Bavaria beziehungsweise Indiepedia durchgehen. Man wird nicht enttäuscht sein!

Nun also zum dritten Teil, wahrscheinlich der, der euch am meisten bringt – denn es gibt was anzuhören! 20 Bands mit je einem Song, die die Hypemachine NME euch vor den Latz knallt. Ich werde zu den Bands, die es wert sind, ein paar Worte verlieren. Wie immer gilt: Subjektiv, bildet euch selbst eine Meinung!

Radar Mixtape 2010

Alte Bekannte, zu denen ich nichts mehr sagen muss, sind: Ellie Goulding, Everything Everything, The Drums, Joy Orbison, Giggs, Hurts, Marina and the Diamonds, Delphic. Die sind alle bereits von der BBC erwähnt worden.

ganz nett – Frankie & The Heartstrings machen dermaßen Retrobeatmusik, dass das ganze auch locker aus Deutschland kommen könnte, Dr. Norton beispielweise.

gut – Kindness klingen interessant. Mehrstimmiger, sphärischer Gesang erinnert an zahlreiche Bands der letzten Jahre, während die elektronische Untermalung ganz im Stil von Kraftwerk und ihren Enkeln von 2007 bleibt. Andere Songs der Band wie “Somewhere” experimentieren mehr mit Bassmelodien und anderen Instrumenten, es bleibt jedoch immer der prägnante Gesang. Nicht verkehrt!

gut – Theophilus London könnte das sein, was einige Leute da draußen geglaubt hatten in Kanye West oder Santogold gefunden zu haben – Rap für das neue Jahrzehnt. London vereint nämlich hinter seinem Sprechgesang zahlreiche andere Elemente, die abseits des Rap aktuell populär sind: Synthiebackground und Dingeleien ganz nach MGMT-Machart (“Humdrum Town”), Wave-Bassläufe im Stile von Joy Division (“Ultraviolet”) oder Grime/Bass (“Soles Of Fire”). Auf alle Fälle ein recht bunter Strauß Musik mit einer gewissen Basslastigkeit, die die Grundstimmung eher dunkel macht. Mehr dazu bei Spreeblick

sehr gut – Washed Out machen Chillwave at its best. Wer jj gemocht hat, wird Washed Out lieben. Die EP “Life of Leisure” besitze ich bereits seit November und bin sehr angetan. Mehr dazu bei Pitchfork.

sehr gut – Surfer Blood habe ich – wie bereits erwähnt - über den Guardian gefunden und war insbesondere von “Swim To Reach The End” sehr angetan, quasi eine Hymne im Stile von Japandroids “Boys Are Leaving Town” und ähnlichem. Aber auch Fans von Wavves kommen angesichts der schicken Riffs und des Gesangs auf ihre Kosten.

sehr gut – Darwin Deez singen wie Radiohead, machen aber deutlich eingängere Musik (ou, wenn da mal nicht wieder einer aufschreit), die sich schnell in die Windungen des Hirns vortastet, wo Glückhormone ausgeschüttet werden. Repetitiv, saubere Melodien, schöner Gesang. Gut.

Fazit: Vor heute morgen waren mir bis auf Washed Out, Surfer Blood und The Drums alle Bands unbekannt. Nach Durchhören der BBC-Tips fallen hier ja einige raus, aber am Ende bleiben doch gute Dinge übrig, die man beobachten sollte: Kindness, Surfer Blood, Washed Out, Theophilus London, Darwin Deez.

Guardian

Was ich am Guardian mag, ist dass er als Nicht-Musikpublikation sehr ausgesucht und unaufgeregt neue Bands raussucht und vorstellt. Weit vom Stil der Hypemachines Pitchfork, Stereogum oder NME entfernt. Zwar wagen die Briten keinen nummerierten Ausblick auf 2010, doch stellen sie alle paar Tage eine neue “Band of the Day” vor, die ausreichend gewürdigt wird. Quasi eine stete Quelle, die alle paar Wochen einen Treffer für mich landet. Surfer Blood bspw. Auch Gold Panda waren schon drin, die hab’ ich damals nur übersehen. So rächt sich das. Wer also stets am Ball sein will, was bald durch die Blogs gejagt wird, sollte hier lesen.

MTVuk

Huch, MTV gibt’s noch? Und man wagt sich an eine Prognose für 2010, mutig mutig! Ah, ist ja auch die britische Version, da gibt’s wohl noch Musik im Programm. Die Vorschläge, die 10 For 10 sind jedoch eher eine Wiederholung der bisher schon genannten Bands: Delphic, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, Ellie Goulding, Marina And The Diamonds, Tinie Tempah, Drake und Rox versprechen nicht gerade sehr viel. Aber auch zum Großteil nicht meine Musikrichtung.

DIE ZEIT

Auch wenn die ZEIT sich sonst nicht unbedingt durch musikalischen Überblick hervortut, hat sie zehn Acts vorgelegt, die sie für relevant hält. Auch hier gibt es alte Bekannte (Hurts, Delphic, Surfer Blood, Theophilus London, Ellie Goulding, King Charles) was wohl klar macht, dass diese, selbst wenn sie gar nicht so gut sind, ihren Durchbruch in 2010 haben werden. Denn Qualität setzt sich nicht zwangsläufig durch, Hypes aber schon eher. (Oder?) Neue Vorschläge sind dagegen folgende Künstler: I Blame Coco, die sich nicht nur einen fähigen Fotografen geangelt hat, sondern sich mit ihrer rauchigen Stimme wohltuend von den ganzen Tussen abhebt, die da so gehypt werden wollen. Die Songs hinter der Stimme allerdings bleiben auf den aktuell gültigen Standards stehen, aber nicht ohne Niveau (“No Smile”). “Self Machine” klingt stark nach The Sounds – wer’s mag. Dann haben wir noch Marques Toliver, der eher R’n'B macht, während Nahiba eher dem Soul fröhnt. Fenech-Soler liefern wieder Einheitsbrei ab, Synthies und Gitarren sollen Avantgarde heucheln, bleiben jedoch stark hinter ihren Vorbildern MGMT und Co. zurück. Ich bevorzuge da dann immer noch Foals, die das deutlich intelligenter (und eingängiger) umgesetzt haben – vor zwei Jahren.

Indiescreet

Indiescreet hat ebenfalls eine ganze Reihe Prognosen für 2010, so die zehn am heißesten erwarteten Alben (LCD Soundsystem, Two Door Cinema Club, Lightspeed Champion, Klaxons, Hot Chip, Arcade Fire, MGMT, Foals, Vampire Weekend), zehn Blogs, die die besten Trends aufspüren sollen (The Recommender, Music Liberation und mehr) und hier am wichtigsten, die 10 acts to watch in 2010:

Ein paar bereits mehrmals genannte Acts sind dabei (Ellie Goulding, Japandroids, Real Estate), aber 7 sind ungenannt und unbekannt. Viel Spaß beim Reinstöbern in Penguin Prison, Calories, King Charles, Internet Forever, Swanton Bombs, French Horn Rebellion oder Local Natives.

Weitere Blogs und Ausblicke

Doch auch die kleineren Blogs wagen Ausblicke auf 2010. Der Pop Cop
hat als Schotte naturgemäß vor der Haustür immer einen ganzen Tourbus voller interessanter Bands und schaut dennoch in andere Länder, seine Favoriten sind beispielsweise Jónsi, ebenfalls der Two Door Cinema Club, Thomas Western, The Unwinding Hours oder Galleries. WhiteTapes gehen die Veröffentlichungsliste des Frühjahrs durch und finden sich genug, um sich zu freuen. Nico freut sich 2010 vor allem auf weitere Alben seiner unserer Lieblinge The National, Spoon oder auch Interpol. Auf genau die bin ich auch sehr gespannt, die Hürden durch die Vorgängeralben liegen verdammt hoch… AUFTOUREN haben dem Jahr 2010 ebenfalls einen umfassenden Ausblick gegönnt, allerdings ist der derart gespickt mit Tips und Informationen, dass ihr euch den lieber selbst durchlest. Und zu guter Letzt beschäftigt sich auch Monarchie & Alltag mit den Newcomern für 2010, Teil 1 über Folk / Songwriter, Teil 2 über Pop.

Erfolgreich waren fast alle der genannten Bands, manche kommerziell ohne eine gewisse Qualitätshürde jedoch in meinen Ohren zu überspringen: Lady GaGa, La Roux, Little Boots, Passion Pit, Empire Of The Sun, White Lies. Das waren alles nette Bands, konnte man sich mal anhören, man konnte es aber auch sein lassen und hatte nichts musikalisch Hochklassiges verpasst. Man konnte sogar einer unsäglichen Leier wie Empire Of The Sun entgehen. Andere Bands wiederum finde ich immer noch richtig, richtig gut, etwa Mumford & Sons, Florence + The Machine oder The Big Pink. Letztere sind übrigens am 26. Januar im 59:1 zu sehen, der einzige Deutschlandtermin!

Die wirklichen Kracher hat jedoch keiner vorausgesehen, weder bei den Newcomern, noch bei den Bands, die bereits ihr drittes, viertes, zehntes Album präsentierten und damit immer noch alle anderen in den Schatten stellten. Also nehmt das Kommende nicht zu ernst, die wahren Highlights sind eigentlich immer nur die Überraschungen, oder?

Für dieses Jahr gibt es noch einige Musikinstitutionen mehr, die es wagen, eine selbsterfüllende Prophezeiung in die Welt zu setzen:

BBC-Kaffeesatz

Auch dieses Jahr legt die BBC eine 15 Bands umfassende Liste zum “Sound of 2010″ vor, die zahlreiche – zahllose – namenlose angefragte Musikjournalisten in ihrem Auftrag zusammengetragen haben. Eine gewisse HMV-Lastigkeit ist immer anzunehmen, doch ein, zwei Perlen waren bisher jedes Jahr dabei. So auch dieses Jahr.

mau - Daisy Dares You macht angeblich Kaugummipunk und hat Kurt Cobain und Karen O. als Vorbilder. Mit diesem Gejaule und einer Attitüde, die es im Doppelpack billiger gibt, ist sie von diesen jedoch so weit weg, wie die Yeah Yeah Yeahs von ihrer Anfangsenergie. Pappig und zäh.

ganz nett – Delphic sind quasi die Thronfolger des Manchester Rave; doch sie verwalten das Erbe nicht nur, sie entwickeln es weiter – eigentlich zurück in die Früh-Neunziger und das nicht schlecht. Live dann kein Laptopgefrickel, sondern eine “echte” Electronica-Band. Am 10. Februar übrigens im 59:1 zu sehen. Und nein, ich bekomm von denen kein Geld, aber im Moment holen die einfach die jungen Acts, während dem Atomic irgendwie der Geschmack abhanden gekommen ist.

mau – Devlin ist Grime-Rapper und nein, das Genre ist offenbar noch nicht tot. Aber es ist im Mainstream angekommen und wird langsam popradiotauglich, was für mich selten ein gutes Zeichen ist. Oppositionist ich… Aber hej, verdammt, ich kann diese hohen, elektronisch verfremdeten Frauenstimmen nicht mehr hören! Fever Ray hatte das perfekt eingesetzt, aber allein hier sind ja 3 Acts dabei, die das verwenden – grauenhaft.

gut – The Drums sind quasi die Gute-Laune-Version der 80er. Sie nehmen den Surf und den Wave und mischen daraus eine unterhaltsame Musik, die keine Maßstäbe setzt, aber weitab von diesem Soundmatsch drumherum ist. Mehr dazu bei istoolong.

gut – Everything Everything sagen, sie machten Melodramtischer Pop mit A Capella. Und eigentlich, so verkehrt ist das doch nicht? Leichte Musik, dennoch mit einem Händchen für etwas komplexere Strukturen bspw. bei Schlagzeug oder Gesang. Zum Mitsingen isses nicht unbedingt. Am 21. Januar im Atomic Café. ganz nett – Giggs hat Meriten: Neben dem obligatorischen Knastaufenthalt, hat er Dizzee Rascal und Chipmunk bei den BET HH-Awards hinter sich gelassen und Mike Skinner als Kollaborateur. Inzwischen bei XL unter Vertrag (White Stripes, M.I.A.), ist dies sicher das Jahr, wo er oben landet. Zwar ist das für meine ungeübten Ohren kein BrettHH wie der von Dizzee, aber entspannt und mit Flow. Würde Speech Debelle jedoch bevorzugen.

brillant – Gold Panda hat sich einen Namen als Remixer von Bloc Party oder Simian Mobile Disco gemacht. Doch solo ist das Ganze noch deutlich stärker, Ambient der absoluten Oberklasse. Mehr dazu bei iso50 und istoolong. Unbeding das Video anschauen! Auch das auf der BBC-Seite!

Gold Panda – Quitter’s Raga

mau – Ellie Goulding kommt aus Wales und macht teils sanfte, teils sehr poppige Songs, hat eine recht hohe, aber angenehme Stimme, die sie jedoch bei manchen Songs elektronisch verzerren lässt. Weichspülerpop, der größtenteils versucht, tiefgehend zu sein, dabei aber nur die nächsten H&M-Songs liefert. Mehr bei 78s und Monarchie & Alltag.

mau – Hurts hurts. Zwar ist die Remineszenz an die späten 80er á la nicht nur vom Aussehen her wirklich gelungen, aber gefallen tut’s mir dennoch immer noch nicht. Tears for Fears oder Level 42 sind passend Vergleiche. Last.fm dreht bei der Band übrigens völlig durch und liefert als passende Acts nur Visual-Key. Öhm. Mehr dazu bei Monarchie & Alltag.

mau – Joy Orbison ist Dance-DJ. Damit is’ der Kas biss’n, nix für mich.

mau – Marina and the Diamonds hat eine schöne Stimme. Und weiter? Nicht viel, Standardpop. Es ödet mich an. Mehr dazu bei Monarchie & Alltag

argh – Owl City. Das darf nicht wahr sein. Wieder elektronisches Gedingel, wieder verzerrte Stimme. Bitte, bitte geht einfach weg, das ist wirklich schlimm. Auch live zu sehen im 59:1, 28. Februar.

hm – Rox. Wer so hübsch lacht, kann kein schlechter Mensch sein. Die Halbiranerin-Jamaikanerin versucht den Soul, der in den letzten Jahren von Alicia Keys und Co. völlig versaut wurde, wieder in die richtige Spur zu bringen. Ich bin mir jedoch nicht sicher, ob das Potential dazu ausreicht. Die Stimme scheint noch etwas unausgereift, die Band glänzt auch eher durch Begleitmusik, statt sich voll mit einzubringen. Hm.

gut – Stornoway machen die Art von Folk, der in den letzten beiden Jahren mit den Maccabees eigentlich ganz gut ankam. Die einen Songs zurückgenommen mit schönen Arrangements, die anderen ausschreitend, fast schon tanzbar. Obwohl, eigentlich ist Folk immer tanzbar, nur nicht ganz so disco-klassisch. Nicht uninteressant.

mau – Two Door Cinema Club ist für mich ein weiterer Abklatsch, eine Copycat, langweilig, keine neuen Ideen, alles in den letzten Monaten und Jahren doch schon xmal gehört. Da ändert auch der Name nix. Am 8. April im Atomic zu sehen.

Fazit: Viel Mist, viel poppiger Kram, der mich einfach nicht mehr interessiert. Schade, dass ausgerechnet die weiblichen Acts alle eine Schublade bedienen, die ich bereits letztes Jahr als H&M-Fahrstuhlmusik bezeichnet habe. Waren wohl nur Männer als Journalisten geladen…

Aber gut sind definitiv The Drums: Der Basslauf, die Synthies ganz 80er-Wave, die Atmosphäre dennoch meist leicht, wie es sich für eine Quasi-Surf-Band (Florida als Entstehungsort) gehört. Sicher nichts weltbewegend Neues, doch stilsicher in alten Gefielden wildernd. Auch Everything Everything hat für mich Potential, allerdings ist die Stimme gewöhnungsbedürftig und gefährdet, dass sie nach einer Weile nervt. Mal sehen. Stornoway haben zwar einen seltsamen Namen, aber ein Gespür für den Sound, der in den Indiekreisen gerade so geht. Und wenn ich mich darauf einlasse, werde ich wissen, ob dieser Folk mit zu platt ist oder nicht doch gut.

Der Fund schlechthin ist für mich aber Gold Panda. Was für ein Kopf, inkorporiert Elemente aus der ganzen Welt (und das darf man wörtlich verstehen) und bastelt daraus einen dermaßen reifen und entspannten Sound! Hab’ mir sofort die EP bestellt und harre auf das Album.

Während in Frankreich eine ähnliche Idee funktioniert hat, gab es eine Art gemeinsamer Jahrescharts in Deutschland nicht. Also haben sich 14 deutsche Blogs mit insgesamt über 30 Bloggern zusammengesetzt, um die Top10 der Alben des Jahres 2009 zu finden. 107 Alben wurden vorgeschlagen und gewertet, am Ende stehen diese 10 an oberster Stelle. Neben den bereits früh als Knaller identifizierten Alben sind so jedoch auch einige Überraschungen aufgekommen; oder wer hätte ohne Überlegung Slow Club, Editors oder We Were Promised Jetpacks in die Top10 gepackt? Wer Interesse hat, kann sich das auch genaue Ranking bis Platz 109 anschauen. (ods oder xls)

Platz 10: Fever Ray – s.t.

Das vermeintlich kälteste Album des Jahres, zumindest wenn man die verzerrte Stimme und die dumpfen Synthiesounds die ersten Male auf sich wirken lässt. Doch hinter dem eisigen Wasserfall sind ungeahnte Landschaften zu finden. Ruhig stapft das Album weiter, über afrikanische Steppen hin zum windigen Atlantik. „When I grow up, I want to live near the sea.“ Ein Album, das schnell wächst, mal tanzend, mal geruhsam fortwärtsschreitend, um sich dann auf den Tafelbergen niederzulassen und zur Antarktis zu schauen. „I put my soul in what I do.“ Das glauben wir aufs Wort. Platz 9: Sunset Rubdown – Dragonslayer

Das vierte Werk von Sunset Rubdown droht anfangs missverstanden zu werden, versteckt sich seine Komplexität doch tückisch hinter einer simpel anmutenden Fassade. Wer den Kanadiern berechenbaren Pop nach einem simplen Schema unterstellt, hat nicht richtig hingehört und verpasst Großartiges. Die Mannen hinter Wolf Parade und Handsome Furs fahren hier teils vertraute Stützen wie Spencers gewohnt eilende Stimme auf, doch kribbelt es dahinter mit jedem Hördurchgang immer mehr; es wächst und gedeiht, über das umzäunte Beet hinaus. Platz 8: Editors – In This Light and on This Evening

Wer hätte den Editors diese Wandlung zugetraut, weg von den Indiestrebern hin zu geradezu morbiden 80er-Hommagen. „They took what once was ours“ singt Tom Smith, doch könnte dieser Satz eher von den Geehrten stammen. Die Gitarren treten in den molligen Hintergrund, die Synthies beherrschen die kühle Szenerie, der Smith’sche Gesang trohnt bedrückend über allem. In seiner Entwicklung erstaunlich – und erstaunlich konsequent.

Platz 7: Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs

Wer 25 Jahre voller einflussreicher und beeinflussender Alben hinter hat, muss nichts mehr beweisen. Wenn er es dennoch schafft und eine zeitlose Symbiose von Indie, Pop & Rock dieser Qualität abliefert, hat er eine besondere Gabe. Er kann sich eigentlich bei jeder Gelegenheit hinstellen und sagen: Yo La Tengo. (Albumstream)

Platz 6: We Were Promised Jetpacks – These Four Walls

Nervös, vertrackt, melodiös. Die Glasgower machen einfallsreichen Indierock, der zwar nicht das Rad neu erfindet, aber doch sehr rund rollen lässt. Knackig treiben die Gitarren den schottischen Akzent vor sich her und lassen sich dennoch Zeit für instrumentale Passagen. Sicher ist: Wer dieses Album hört, braucht weder Koffein noch Trombosestrümpfe, aber jemanden, der die Momente mit ihm teilt. (Albumstream)

Platz 5: Slow Club – Yeah So

Melancholisch-poetische Songs, ironische Lyrik, bittersüße Atmosphäre. Das Duo Slow Club bringt den Folk der letzten Jahre auf den Punkt und knüpft mit seinen angenehmen Arrangements dennoch an weit Älteres an. Orgel, Rhythmusgeräte wie Löffel oder Gläser, Harmoniegesänge allenthalben regen zum Träumen, zum Tanzen, zum Mitsingen an. Musik für alle Jahreszeiten.

Platz 4: Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

Was „Veckatimest“ zu einem perfekten Vertreter des Jahres 2009 macht, ist, dass ihre Eigenwilligkeit, ihre Eigentümlichkeit nie daran hindert, die Schönheit des Albums zu erkennen. Wo andere Bands möglichst viele Stile inkorporieren, manövrieren sich Grizzly Bear mäandernd zwischendurch, ruhig, voller Spannung. Die unwahrscheinlichste Konsensband des Jahres. (Albumstream)

Platz 3: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – s.t.

Ein Album, das auf leisen Schuhen daherkommt und, wenn man nicht rechtzeitig die Ohren spitzt, in seiner Leichtigkeit schnell auch vorbeigeht. Denn die Vielschichtigkeit des poppigen Shoegaze lässt einen die wunderbaren Momente von „The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart“ immer wieder entdecken, mal düster, mal eingängig, aber nie belanglos. Der Name ist Programm.

Platz 2: Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion

„No one should call you a dreamer“, das Motto von Animal Collective auf den Punkt gebracht. Das Album, das die verworrensten Songstrukturen mit den schönsten Melodien verbinden kann, das den Hörer in einen flow, einen emotionalen Ausnahmezustand versetzen kann. Er muss sich nur darauf einlassen und das Album lässt sich auch auf ihn ein. (Albumstream)

Platz 1: The xx – xx

Es war das Album, das die Lücke traf, die all die Bands der letzten Jahre gerissen hatten; zurückhaltend und reduziert wie der Folk, dennoch intensiv und mitreißend wie New Rave und New Wave.
